A weekend in Wenchi

In the late afternoon, we will take you to Welisso, a small town with hot springs where one of Haile Selassie’s royal residences is located. And you will have the opportunity to taste a bit of this imperial life, as you will stay in this palace this evening. Transformed into a lodge, nestled in the heart of the Menagesha forest, the Negash Lodge offers you a prestigious stopover before tomorrow’s adventure.

Many agree that the most beautiful extinct volcanoes are found in Ethiopia. About 120 km from the capital, you are on your way to the enchanting site of Wenchi with its magnificent crater lake from which several islets emerge. From its summit at 3,200 meters altitude, one enjoys one of the most striking panoramas in the country. This sumptuous blue lake with its tortured shape shelters islands and churches that are home to 3,000 people distributed among 400 families. From the athletic to the casual walker, four hiking options, all amazing, are offered to you. Village life, the insular church of Saint Kirkos, hot springs, waterfalls, dense forest, and spectacular landscapes – there will be something for everyone. Here, everything invites contemplation and walking. This evening, after a meal by a campfire, you will fall asleep on the shores of this marvelous enclave.

After having fully enjoyed the rising sun rays and a long walk along the lake, we will take the Butajira road for our return, to visit the Paleolithic site of Melka Kunturé. From time immemorial and far beyond, Ethiopia has always been populated, as evidenced by this site of major importance for understanding the world. It will then be time, after this weekend of change of scenery, to head back towards the capital.
